Vim Suscitat Ira

Here is today's emblem and distich by Joachim Camerarius, 2.5. The rhinoceros was considered to be a placid and agreeable animal but, if roused to a fury, could prove to be a dangerous opponent. Here you see the rhino doing battle with a bear! The emblem is inspired by a poem of Martial, #22 in the Liber Spectaculorum, which describes a staged combat between a rhincoeros and a bear; here is Martial's poem in Latin and in English.

Non temere caecam vir fortis fertur ad iram,
